    Title:
Media files not uploading to Ancestry Tree from Family Treemaker 2014
    Summary:
Media files not uploading to Ancestry Tree from Family Treemaker 2014
    Content:

I uploaded and created a media file in Family Tree maker 2014 for a number of photos.  I attached the photos to a person in my tree but the acutal pictures are not uploading to Ancestry.com.  A "blank photo" appears with the description but the actual photo does not.  How do I fix this without having to duplicate my efforts in my ancestry tree

Update: 1/22/2014  This is an issue only with Firefox browser.  They show up in Internet Explorer.

I did as requested, and it had no effect. Same problem still exists.

I retested, and now the issue seems to occur with only newly uploaded media. (IE Since I started using Family Tree Maker 3 for Mac).   I double checked the source files, and they are fine on my Mac, and display properly in FTM3.  They are under the maximum file size for upload to Ancestry.

I extended testing to Firefox with the same outcomes.   (Same still with Chrome and Safari).

      How do I proceed?

        Hello David,

So your issue of media not displaying is within Ancestry.com and not in FTM for Mac 3? You can not upload them to Ancestry, or you have uploaded your entire file and the photos are not uploading? Do you have the default picture displaying for the media you are hvaing issues with? Please take a screen shot example.

        Thank you,

      Hannah,

Media on Ancestry.com do not download as expected. I get an error page instead.

Example document from a public tree:

      http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/39612937/person/19391776650/mediax/1?pgnum=1&pg=0&pgpl=pid%7CpgNum

      Error Page (attached)

The same document in FTM is fine. Summary file "info":

File Name: Whitney John b1900 1929 Marriage Certificate.pdf

Document type: Portable Document Format (PDF)

File size: 11.8 MB (11,834,357 bytes)

      PDF Version: 1.3

      Page Count: 1

      Page Size: 11 × 8.5 inches

        David,

If you upload PDF documents to your online tree, they will upload as stories and you will need to download them to access them. Because the download link goes to a page unavailable error, I recommend deleting then re-uploading the pdf document.

If you want the document to show as a media item in your tree, then you will need to convert the file into some other type of format that can be uploaded as a media item.

        Thanks,

        Luke R.

I am OK with individuals downloading the PDF to view.  That is what I was expecting to have happen. I uploaded a copy of the same document again and got the same error when retrieving.  I looked at the Source Citation Screen for the entry associated with this media, and noted a new error:

"This source uses a Family Tree Maker template that can only be edited in Family Tree Maker."

Is this related to why I cannot download the attached media?

Any updates on what I should do to correct this, or a confirmation that this a site problems?

    • Luke R

      David,

So sorry about the long wait to hear back from me. Did you try deleting and re-uploading the file to see if that resolves the issues? Based on what you are experiencing currently, it looks like the file and/or the link to the file is corrupt. In answer to your question, I checked and that message does not indicate anything to do with the issue of not being able to open the file.

      Thanks,

I am really disgusted with FTM2014 vs 2012 and trying to upload and sync with online tree!  First, after following all directions, I LOST FTM2012 - it's gone! and I am no novice. online tree is showing synced, but in FTM shows it isn't.  Then in online tree all photos, stories, etc. are showing a blank icon, and the hints are showing I need to download all the media.  The media took about 4-6 hours to download, finally came up except one.  So I downloaded that one photo.  Then the icons came back up on all people EXCEPT the one I just downloaded, and that photo is there, but the rest are not!

What in the world is going on here.  This is not an extremely large tree - maybe with about 1400 people and about 400 photos and stories.

If I download a GEDCOM of my old online tree back to FTM 2012, will I lose all the photos, stories, etc?  Then if I link the FTM 2012 (from which I got the GEDCOM) and sync to my old tree, will I get the photos and such back into 2012?

Why in the world did they change the format in 2014 so it isn't compatible with 2012? Evidently the new format isn't compatible with sync either. I remember full well the syncing problems that came with 2012, but after all the late nights, gritted teeth, and 2012 updates, it worked like a charm.

HELP! I wish I had never changed over to FTM2014.

      Hi Abby,

When you say FTM 2012 is gone, do you mean the program, or the tree that was in the program? The only part that would be incompatible about the two programs is if you tried to load a tree from Family Tree Maker 2014 into the 2012 version, otherwise you should be able to use both programs without a problem.

In answer to your question about the GEDCOM, you will lose all the photos unless you chose the option to include media links, which will re-connect all the media items when the tree is imported back into Family Tree Maker, provided that you didn't move or otherwise change the media items for that tree.

And to resolve your problems with media items uploading, it sounds like that one media item may be corrupt. You will want to try the Find Missing Media tool, then try removing and re-adding the media item, and then re-uploading and syncing your tree. It's also a good idea to follow the steps at this link to repair your file, even though it is relatively small.

      Thanks,

      Luke R.

      All,

Deleting / uploading does not help.  I did this for a document that was working, and now it cannot be downloaded.  Any document that is added from Family Tree Maker 3 and synced up to Ancestry.com cannot be downloaded.

Note that I have only been testing with PDFS.

      • Luke R

        David,

I tried to replicate this in Family Tree Maker for Mac 3 and was unable to, the file that had been previously uploaded to the tree then synced to the online tree was downloadable. Have you tried repairing your file or trying to repair the sync?

        Thanks,

I regularly compact and backup my database weekly. (As described in "repairing your file").  "Reparing the sync" has me unlinking and downloading the tree from Ancestry.com.  I cannot download/view the file attached to copy on Ancestry, so that seems ill advised.

I am attaching the file that is not syncing for an example.

    • Luke R

      David,

Is that the only file that you are having trouble downloading after a sync? If so, try removing the document from the tree, copying the words, pictures, etc. of the file into a new document then exporting it to a pdf format and re-uploading the new document to your tree. If there are multiple that you are having this problem with and the steps above work for one file, you may have to do the same for the other files as well. However, were you able to try all of the steps in the treesync troubleshooting article other than unlinking and relinking your tree?

      Thanks,
